Chapter One

The start of a new book is always exciting, like stepping on a plane for an anticipated travel adventure. There’s a lot of hope, anticipation, and uncertainty—and that’s what makes it fun. It’s even more exciting to start reading a book written by a personal friend.

I have had the pleasure to get to know Ms. Gayle Martz through Jim Schmit, the subject of A Most Improbable Millionaire. Gayle and Jim met several years ago and became quick friends due to their love of pets, travel, and because they share a positive outlook on life. They also were both working on books at the time; Gayle’s now done and Jim’s almost done, which I am fully qualified to report as I am the one writing, formatting, and walking it through the publishing process.

This morning, I made a cup of tea, plopped on my couch under a soft blanket, opened up It’s In The Bag, and read the first five pages out loud. What a joy, to see someone’s hard work come to fruition! What a relief, to truly enjoy their work! Gayle and I have talked on several occasions of the challenges and tenacity it takes to write and finish a book. The home stretch may be the hardest part—like running a marathon yet trying to muster up the momentum to finish the last half mile of the race when utterly exhausted.

Holding Gayle’s book in my hands is like the cheering squad that is motivating me to finish the last half mile of Jim’s book. Except, now I’m distracted because I want to read her book instead of work on Jim’s. Reading vs. writing: the endless struggle of a writer who loves to read. Thanks for the motivation Gayle! And Congratulations!!
