I Like Rocks
I’ve had the good fortune of being able to work from the mountains the past few weeks enjoying the fresh air, mild climate, and lots of hiking. After I wrap up my work tasks for the day, I head outdoors with my hiking friend to explore the well-worn and lesser used trails around Mammoth Lakes, California.
On these treks, I’ve discovered that I like standing on big, giant rocks. It is not unusual that I ask my friend to wait for me because there is a rock I need to stand on. Then I walk over, give it a look, and perch on top of it. After a minute, I hop off the rock and back onto the trail and we continue on. Sometimes there is a picture taken, but most of the time there is no evidence of my new hobby. Either way, I enjoy it all the same.
It’s odd, I admit it, this standing on rocks business. However, it’s funny how you think you know yourself so well and then you realize at 42 you like standing on big rocks. In searching for some sort of meaning to this, you could say we never stop growing if we never stop exploring. It could mean I like stability in my life, or maybe it’s me connecting back to my geography and geology roots from my college days. Perhaps I enjoy the balancing challenge that reminds me of my childhood gymnastics lessons. Probably, it simply means nothing more than I like standing on rocks. It doesn’t really matter in the end, so I’ll keep enjoying the silly pleasure of finding and standing on big rocks.
